Duties of the school nurse include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Providing basic healthcare to students in cases of injury, acute, or chronic health problems;
- Overseeing medication administration and healthcare procedures;
- Overseeing and conducting vision, hearing, body mass index, mental health screening procedures, and writing referrals for health services for pediatricians and other health specialists;
- Detect health problems in early stages through regular screenings;
- Developing and monitoring health plans for students with chronic illnesses and disabilities based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care
- Providing health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings on healthy habits, such as proper nutrition and hygiene;
- Keep track of students’ vaccination records and update students’ medical history;
- Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff and overseeing infection control measures (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases);
- Monitoring immunizations, managing communicable diseases, and assessing the school environment as to prevent injury and ensure safety;
- Serving as consultants with other school professionals, such as food service personnel, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors;
- Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school
- Providing health advice to school educational teams, such as the Committee on Special Education and the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team
- Assisting families with locating outside care and obtaining health insurance
- Ensure compliance with national and local health laws;
- Making decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance.
