POSITION TITLE:        CUSTODIAN - Totaro Elementary School

CONTRACT YEAR:        12-month

SALARY:                       SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE

DEPARTMENT:             MAINTENANCE/SCHOOL LEVEL 

START DATE:               July 1, 2024

 

Job Description:  The candidate for this position will demonstrate a level of responsibility and initiative taking to maintain and protect the facilities and grounds. The candidate will demonstrate pride in their work and for the occupants to ensure the external and internal appearance represent the culture and climate of the school. It is important for a custodian, or janitor, to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises, as well as preventing vandalism. The ideal candidate will be experienced in a custodian role focused on building upkeep. They will have great physical endurance to cover a large space. A keen eye for detail and diligence are also imperative in custodial maintenance jobs.


Direct Accountability and Report:  Works under the supervision of the Principal and Head Custodian, who is responsible for ensuring the day to day operations and programs and events are set up and presented for instruction, academic and athletic events, visiting stakeholders comfort and safety. An annual classified evaluation will be based upon the job description, district and personal goals and objectives specific to the position, and the performance of the Custodian.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma is preferred but not required
    • Certification in maintenance or repairs attractive

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role 
  • Experienced in working with customer service
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances
  • Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components
  • Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices
  • Attention to detail and conscientiousness
  • Very good physical condition and strength

 

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

General duties of the Custodian include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Ensure spaces are cleaned, stocked with supplies, and prepared for the next day by taking out trash, tidying furniture and dusting surfaces
  • Sweep and mop floors and vacuum carpets
  • Wash and sanitize toilets, sinks and showers and restock disposables (e.g. soap)
  • Wipe mirrors and windows
  • Maintain outer premises by watering plants, mowing lawn, cleaning entrances
  • Utilize insecticides to prevent infestation by dangerous pests
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs (replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks etc.)
  • Report major damages to management and oversee repairs
  • Perform and document routine inspection and maintenance activities
  • Carry out heavy cleansing tasks and special projects (summer cleaning, support for district level events, etc.
  • Stock and maintain supply rooms
  • Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarm
  • Undertake occasional custodial and janitorial tasks (shoveling snow from the sidewalk, lifting heavy items, moving chairs etc.)
  • Follow all health and safety regulations
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Works to promote the well-being and success of the building  up-keep for  co-workers, administration, division staff, students, and parents concerning cleaning/maintenance inquiries
  • Adheres to federal and state laws, school and division policies, and ethical guidelines.
  • Sets goals for improvement of knowledge and skills.
  • Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with maintenance and school level staff, administrators, other school personnel, parents, and community.
  • Report to work regularly, good attendance and have flexibility for late and early shifts as assigned.
