JOB TITLE: Speech/Language Pathologist

LOCATION:  Red Oak Elementary School and Totaro Elementary School

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

SUMMARY:

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing speech/language services to meet the individual needs of students with oral communication and speech/language impairments. The candidate will be responsible for screening and assessment; goal development; and planning/implementing appropriate speech and language treatment services to maximize student learning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Evaluate and assess students’ functional status to identify and determine needs for speech/language therapy.
  • Select, administer, and interpret specialized hearing and speech tests.
  • Gather background information as necessary on students’ educational, medical, social, and psychological history to assist with determining possible causes of speech disorders.
  • Serve as a member of the IEP/Eligibility team as needed.
  • Develop individualized education plans for students receiving speech/language therapy services and implements therapy sessions that target IEP goals.
  • Choose appropriate activities for developing students’ speech, voice, fluency, and language skills.
  • Instruct students on how to monitor their own speech and provide ways to practice skills.
  • Provide consultation to teachers and staff members to ensure the integration of speech/language development techniques into the student’s classroom routine.
  • Monitor student progress, reevaluate IEP objectives, and adjusts delivery of speech/language services as appropriate.
  • Conference with parents/guardians and provide them with support and information regarding their child.
  • Instruct parents/guardians in exercises to implement at home and in the care and use of specialized equipment.
  • Serve as a resource to staff members
  • Consult with physicians and other agencies as necessary to assist with referring students to appropriate specialists.
  • Adhere to legal and ethical standards and guidelines regarding the provision of speech/language services.
  • Maintain thorough records for each student receiving speech/language services at the assigned school(s) and provide related reports.
  • Requisition needed supplies and equipment.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Pupil Personnel Services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must possess at a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Pathology and hold or be eligible to hold a School Speech-Language Pathologist license issued by the Virginia Department of Education as well as meet the additional licensure eligibility requirements as provided by the Virginia Department of Education.

Experience with speech language therapy in a school based setting is preferred.

Salary Range: $43,260 - $61,751
