Description

Job Description:  The candidate for this position will support student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process. The candidate for this role will work to advance programs that support the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement and health of students. The candidate will guide and support the administration in protocols and education awareness of keeping children healthy, safe, in school, and ready to learn as their top priority for both healthcare and educational systems, and also performing other duties as assigned.

 

Direct Accountability and Report:  Works under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Personnel who is responsible for carrying out the guidance and direction for the school division. An annual evaluation will be based upon the job description, district and personal goals and objectives specific to the school or the position, student achievement data, and the performance of the teacher. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in nursing education program
  • Completed 500 hours of supervised, direct, hands-on client care approved by a registered nurse education program.  
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination or NCLEX-RN

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful, full-time nursing experience preferred.

 

Duties of the school nurse include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing basic healthcare to students in cases of injury, acute, or chronic health problems;
  • Overseeing medication administration and healthcare procedures;
  • Overseeing and conducting vision, hearing, body mass index, mental health screening procedures, and writing referrals for health services for pediatricians and other health specialists;
  • Detect health problems in early stages through regular screenings;
  • Developing and monitoring health plans for students with chronic illnesses and disabilities based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care
  • Providing health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings on healthy habits, such as proper nutrition and hygiene; 
  • Keep track of students’ vaccination records and update students’ medical history;
  • Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff and overseeing infection control measures (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases);
  • Monitoring immunizations, managing communicable diseases, and assessing the school environment as to prevent injury and ensure safety;
  • Serving as consultants with other school professionals, such as food service personnel, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors;
  • Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school
  • Providing health advice to school educational teams, such as the Committee on Special Education and the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team
  • Assisting families with locating outside care and obtaining health insurance
  • Ensure compliance with national and local health laws;
  • Making decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance.
